Sherman, Pendleton,
Matheny, and Nichols to Montpelier Victory Lane on July 9.
With July 9th
serving as the final tune up for the big money at the Double Header
Classic next weekend, a healthy 33 UMP Modified field signed in to
compete at the Montpelier Motor Speedway. Todd Sherman and Casey
Luedke made up the first row of the A Main, and when the green flag
flew Sherman began working the low grove with Luedke working side by
side in the middle grove An early caution slowed the pace and
found damage on heavy hitters, Scott and Aaron Orr’s machines when
they were unable to avoid slight contact with a spun car in front of
them. When the green flag flew again, Sherman and Luedke led around
the low grove meanwhile North Manchester’s, Ryan Cripe was the first
to venture to the top shelf propelling himself into the second
position from 6th and soon Rensselaer’s Derek Losh
followed suit working the high side as well. As the race
progressed, Losh took 2nd from Cripe and began to pursue
Sherman who began to hit lap traffic. As Sherman and Losh continued
to play cat and mouse through lapped traffic, Losh closed the gap to
a couple of car length; however, it wasn’t enough to catch Sherman.
The win marked Sherman’s 48th win at the speedway
spanning a decade of racing at Montpelier. Losh finished second
with Cripe, Luedke, and 2010 Track Runner-Up Zeke McKenzie rounding
out the top 5. Last week’s winner, Tyler Boggs won the 17 car B
Main and heat races were won by Luedke, Cripe, Lonnie McIntryre, and
Sherman.
When Pendleton Motorsports
makes the 4 hour tow one way from Jackson, Ohio to East Central
Indiana, they certainly make the trip worth their effort. Aaron
Pendleton, a three time winner at the speedway in 2010, picked up
the Mod Lite feature win making Pendleton the 6th
different winner in 6 races at the speedway in Mod Lite action.
Early on Gary Griffith, Hillsboro, Ohio, took the reins with
Bloomingburg, Ohio’s J.T. Jones following closely in tow. Griffith
and Jones swapped the leads several times racing side by side
through the corners. Meanwhile, Pendleton continued to work his way
through the field as a heat race spin earlier in the evening
relegated him to a back of the pack starting spot. Pendleton worked
the high side blasting off the cushion to grab the lead from
Griffith and Jones. Jones made a strong run at Pendleton deep in
the feature; however, Pendleton was able to grab hold on to pick up
the win. Jones finished second, Dan Smith followed suit making a
strong run to third place from the back, Gary Griffith and Dennis
Griffith rounded out the top 5.
Super Street action found
current point’s leader, Tony Anderson of Bluffton, Ohio, grabbing
the lead early with Richmond’s Jeff Matheny in second. Anderson and
Matheny took two different approaches with Anderson working the low
side and Matheny blasting the top side. Matheny swept around
Anderson to grab the lead and continued a strong run. Deep in the
feature Anderson made a several strong runs at Matheny but was
unable to complete the pass as Matheny took his first Montpelier
checkers of the season. Anderson, Luke Timmerman, Calvin Collis,
and Jamie Heiser rounded out the top 5. Heat races were won by
Anderson and Timmerman.
In Thunder Car action,
Marion, Indiana’s Jason Shrout led early and often with heat winner
Shane Richardson in tow. As the feature progressed, Shrout appeared
to slow and the race was soon halted by a red flag when a small fire
appeared under Shrout’s machine. Diagnosed with a broken hub,
Shrout’s evening would end prematurely and his points lead
vanished. At the beginning of the feature, 2010 Thunder Car Track
Champion and Portland, Indiana’s Travis Nichols looked to be an
unlikely winner began as he was forced to start deep in the field.
Nichols methodically worked his way through the field picking up his
3rd feature win of the season. Mark Keith, Lonnie
Hughes, Steve Mills, and Rick Frasure rounded out the top 5. Heat
race winners included Jason Shrout and Shane Richardson.
